Vintage silver gelatin print

Stamped on the reverse Photograph Man Ray
In choosing a 1947 self-portrait as the cover of the 1963 album Man Ray Portraits that presented a selection of his most successful portraits, Man Ray was possibly hinting that he was his own best subject. Self-portraiture was a major theme in his work throughout his career, whether in the form of photographs, paintings or objects. The same 1947 image was used for the cover of another important 1963 publication: his autobiography, Self Portrait.
Man Ray’s Man Rays, West Palm Beach: Norton Gallery of Art, 1994-95, no. 119.
